An inmate search begins with custody level. A federal locator will not answer every state, county jail, juvenile, or recently released-custody question.

Inmate number: Use the system-specific identifier when known.
Full name: Try the recorded name and only supported variants.
Age or date of birth: Use to separate people with similar names when the official tool supports it.
Custody jurisdiction: Federal, state, and local agencies maintain separate systems.
Facility or location: A last-known facility can help route the search, but status can change.

Custody status is time-sensitive and system coverage is not universal.

Wrong jurisdiction

A no-result response can mean the person is held in a different custody system.

Timing

Transfers, releases, bookings, and data updates can create a delay or changed result.

Identity match

Do not rely on name alone when dates, identifiers, or location details are available.

Different record

Custody location does not replace the court file, charging record, or official disposition.
